1968: Hubert Humphrey (D) vs Ted Williams (R) vs George Wallace (AI)

Suppose that Red Sox baseball legend (a lifelong conservative) Ted Williams had gone into politics and run for president in 1968. Politically he was a pretty down the line cold war conservative who admired Douglas MacArthur so he likely would have been more hawkish then Nixon. He was always avowedly anti-racist though due largely to his Mexican heritage so he might be more likely to avoid coded racial appeals. Who wins?

Williams narrowly wins due to his name recognition, although he does worse than Nixon in the South (except for Texas) and loses many liberal Republicans. The Humphrey campaign would target him as inexperienced, but Williams' charisma would stick with voters. He wins Texas by a very close margin.

I'd give him Maine and possibly CT tbh due to his popularity in New England. Otherwise I agree with this map.
