Before conducting this poll, I was considering whether to post this on the Off-Topic board.
But since the Spucklers act as an allegory in which the family members are to represent the hillbilly culture and their idiosyncrasies, I concluded that this topic also fits the contents of this board.

We all know that the Simpsons don't live in a particular U.S. state, but Matt Groening certainly had a Appalachian region in mind when he created the Spucklers.

What state springs to mind when you think of those yokels?
Do they even have a certain accent when they talk?

Clearly Tennessee. They are obviously Appalachian based on a lot of things (moonshine, incest, roadkill, etc) but that leaves a lot of room. However, Homer refers to Cletus as “cotton picking” and while this could just be Homer being Homer, but cotton actually never grew much in Appalachia meaning our search is narrowed. Additionally this is further supported by the fact when Bart and Mary were getting married they used the “something old” as a Confederste Flag. While sure maybe it was adopted by racists in the 1920s, there are heavy implications Cletus’s family did side with the confederacy, which basically kills most of Appalachia, that means Cletus is likely from somewhere on the threshold of Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee meaning different parts of the two distinct regions rubbed off on the family. Also a quick google search shows that only four states had people with the “Spuckler” surname (not sure how reliable this is) Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and Ohio. I think if forced to pick from one of these TN is obvious.

Very good research and reasoned arguments!
I thought of Mississippi, but that seems to be obviously wrong.
The logic behind my assumption lies in the fact that their daughter Mary made it to New York and Hollywood, which reminds me of rural Mississppi-born singers that made it big in the entertainment industry, such as Britney Spears, Brandy Norwood, La'Porsha Renae (all of whom happened to be born in McComb), Elvis Presley, or LeAnn Rimes.
But on the other hand, it would also resemble Dolly Parton's course of life, which would support your thesis.
Can you detect a distinct type of accent from their mode of speaking, or can you identify their local vernacular?

West Virginia comes to mind. Maybe Kentucky too.

Definitely an Appalachian state.

Mr. and Mrs. Spuckler remind me of this lovely married couple. (Or are they a pair of siblings? Well, it probably doesn't matter...)
