There has never been a black female governor of any state, and while Stacey Abrams was often discussed, some folks now think Winsome Sears is an obvious contender. I think she and Juliana Stratton are some kind of early frontrunner in their states, for 2025 and 2026, respectively.

A dark horse on that question whose name was never mentioned is Lisa Blunt Rochester, currently the sole House member from Delaware. The state elects its governor in presidential years and incumbent John Carney is term-limited in 2024. I think Rochester would be an obvious candidate for the job, if she wants it, and would almost certainly get Biden's endorsement as well. However, it seems she' barely on anyone's radar, but could really make history with a run. And even before Sears or Stratton get their chances, unless they have to step in early via succession.

Any thoughts?

Not sure Winsome Sears is likely, she was really only dragged across thanks to Youngkin and she was much crazier than him. If the spotlight was on only her, I just don't see it.

It's more likely she's waiting to see if Carper retires in 2024. She would almost certainly be the frontrunner for the senate seat.

If Carper retires she will definitely run. But I could see her running for Governor if he doesn't.

A very real and very interesting prospect is if Blunt Rochester does run for senate/governor a very likely contender to take her seat would be Sarah McBride. McBride would be the first openly trans member of congress in history

It's possible.

But if it isn't her it will depend on who is in the White House and how that affects the 2025 New Jersey and Virginia elections.

If Sears is nominated in Virginia and a Democrat wins in 2024, I have a sick feeling that she'll win.

If a Republican wins in 2024, and Sheila Oliver is the New Jersey Democratic candidate, she'll win.

Neither win if the same party is in the White House.

After last year I have grown more infuriated by these off-year gubernatorial elections.

Well she’s not a lock to run, let alone win her primary.

No, but she’s certainly a big contender, and one of just five openly trans state legislators in america. And the one representing the largest constituency. If anyone is going to be the first trans congressperson it’s her

It's very much possible, imho, though I think she's more likely to aim for senate in 2024. If Carper doesn't retire, a run 4 gov is plausible. She would stand a good chance to win the primary and GE.

Now that would really get up the Freedom Caucus's noses.
