Indiana’s Republican attorney general said on Wednesday that his office planned to investigate the Indiana doctor who helped a 10-year-old rape victim who crossed state lines to have an abortion.

Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Indianapolis, has told multiple outlets that she provided care to the 10-year-old after a child abuse doctor in Ohio contacted her. The child was six weeks and three days into the pregnancy, Bernard said. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month, a wave of state-level abortion restrictions took effect, including in Ohio, a state that bans abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

“We’re gathering the evidence as we speak, and we’re going to fight this to the end, including looking at her licensure if she failed to report. And in Indiana it’s a crime … to intentionally not report,” state Attorney General Todd Rokita said on Fox News on Wednesday night.

This is what those people celebrating the end of Roe v. Wade wanted! This is the culmination of the Republican project.

If there's a legal reporting requirement on providers who provide abortion in cases of rape/incest, then it should be enforced.

What is immoral about requiring abortions performed in cases of rape/incest be reported?

Why should an abortion be reported to the government?

In cases of rape/incest, and especially when we're talking about children.  Doctors have a responsibility to report suspected child abuse to the proper authorities.

Absolutely they do

But why should abortions be reported to the state? (making the non reporting of one an offence)

What benefit is there in reporting the abuse, but filling a separate or additional report if there's a pregnancy or termination?

Why does the state need to know this?

Report the abuse. Not the abortion.

The ironic thing is this was a top national news story yet the criminal act is supposedly failure to report. I suppose if turning on the TV doesn't count.

The people who gleefully denied that this had ever happened so they could avoid confronting the consequences of their political beliefs want an excuse for not believing it, so they’ll blame the doctor.

Abortion is the killing of the innocent human life, regardless of the circumstances.

All innocent life ought to not be killed. If an innocent human life is killed, their ought to be an investigation and prosecution.

If you are argumenting about ideal situations, maybe US Congresspeople should donate 50% of their salary in order to pay for orfanates and child education.

Not unexpected either.

Can legal action be taken against Fox for recklessly endangering this doctor's life? No reasonable person could conclude anything other than what Fox is doing is putting this doctor's life in danger, and that they are fully aware of it.

Children's bodies are not meant to give birth. The innocent life here is that of the child who was raped, not of a clump of cells. This is ghoulish.

At this point, 98% of Republicans probably agree with what Richard Mourdock said back in 2012. If he was running in 2022 for the Senate, I imagine he'd win by 15 points.

If it's the party of stupid, then a nativist xenophobe who comes up with the most idiotic 'arguments' against legal immigration would be a great fit for it, no?

If I didn't already say it, yeah, this is utterly and absolutely vile. Republicans should have some shame.

The party of small government and personal liberty in action.

This, but keep in mind 'small government and personal liberty' is just their code for 'tax cuts and less common sense regulations for our rich donors, and no gun control'. It doesn't apply when it comes to, say, wiretapping Americans' phone conversations, regulating who can marry who, deciding who can swim in which competition, or deciding you're the doctor and telling women when they can and can't have abortions (and basically always saying you can't, as this example shows).
