Buchanan was born in the same year as John McCain, and outlived him.

If Buchanan defeated John McCain in an upset during the 2008 GOP primaries, how would he fare against Obama?

Not good. The environment in 2008 would be an uphill battle for any GOP nominee, but Buchanan in particular was too far to the right, especially when contrasted with Obama. This map is based on the assumption that Buchanan would apologize for his more controversial statements, like defending Nazi war criminals and calling for the Central Park Five to be publicly hung and whipped. If he stood by them, states like GA and the Dakotas flipping wouldn't be out of the question.

This, except replace Indiana with Georgia or South Dakota.

It wouldn't be close. Buchanan makes his problems worse by picking Palin as his running mate.

Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)/Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) 60%
Commentator Pat Buchanan (R-D.C)/Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) 38%
