I wonder how the states would rank if we considered taxes, labor law, Medicaid expansion, abortion and marijuana tolerance, equality, self-protection, the death penalty, and so forth.

How liberal or conservative are the states actually on policy?

I guess on reputation, I can probably sort into several buckets-

“Super hippie states”
Vermont, Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii

“Pretty Liberal”
Colorado, New York, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Minnesota, Illinois

“Maybe a little liberal”
Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware

“About 50/50”
Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, Iowa, Virginia

“Kind of conservative”
Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Missouri, Montana, Alaska

“Really conservative”
Louisiana, Kansas, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Indiana, South Carolina

“Jeez…save some cousins for the rest of us”
Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama
