Liz Truss has declared herself a Freedom Fighter. All we need now is for Sunak to attack her for Excessive Hyperbole and Atlas will have gone mainstream.

V funny to see Liz Truss talk about people being work shy on benefits.

As some one with experience of the field (not personally luckily but through work) the benefits system is extremely cruel, doesn’t actually give enough money anyway and those who are long term users are basically either too ill to work or are unable to.

We’ve had 12 years of Tory Governments squeezing the tap- there’s not much more you can do.

Along with Sunaks grammar school pledge it’s just dishonest pandering that gets peoples hopes up

In a move that we can all agree is entirely based on conviction, Tom Tugendhat has backed Liz Truss.

Has this vibe:

Man wants to be Foreign Secretary so bad - and it’ll probably still end up going to James Cleverly or similar.

A lot of confidential government documents shedding a bad light on Sunak's time in office are finding their way to the press but nobody has any idea who could possibly be leaking them...

Yes I’ve seen identical lines briefed out by Sunak’s campaign that we saw from Yvette Cooper in 2015- undecided voters will favour swing their way, people changing their mind, most likely to defeat the opposition etc etc

Makes sense. Her mother supported her in the 2010 election and recently appeared at a campaign event. Her father did neither (and in an interview today she says only her mum would definitely vote for her).

Some people seem rather anxious for Sunak to withdraw, but I don't think he will.

Sunak going big on a 4 point tax cut- but won’t finish until 2028.

Getting widely mocked for it- as is not only a huge U-turn but looks desperate.

This thing has been over since the first debate which Sunak pretty clearly flubbed. Problem is that if he withdraws now, it makes a mockery of the whole membership vote idea; but if he doesn’t withdraw, then we have to sit through a month of incredibly pointless campaigning. Sigh.

Sunak's self-abasement in the last 24 hours has almost reached Jeremy Hunt proportions.

Surprised that no British tabloid has yet printed the headline "Rishi Sunknak". Grin xD

Of course he had to pledge that he wouldn't withdraw when he originally joined the contest.  I doubt that is enforceable though; what would they do?  Even something like barring him from the next leadership election could easily be revoked by the 1922 Committee when it comes to it (hopefully quite soon).

I really hope he doesn't withdraw. Not only because I want to see Sunak and Williamson humiliated by the membership but also because the lack of a true mandate haunted Theresa May's premiership and was one of the undercurrents which constantly undermined her.

In other news, third placed Penny Mordaunt has backed Liz Truss. This might seem strange but it isn't really - she never was the woke caricature that some made her out to be.

Sunak withdrawing would I think be bad for the Conservative Party and Liz Truss but maybe good for the country as we get to have a proper new government that can start addressing the problems the country is facing without waiting til September?

Hahaha, levelling up indeed.

And apparently that paycut isn't just for bureaucrats, it's for NHS/school staff as well.

A brave and courageous policy, as Sir Humphrey would say.

Pay cuts for nurses, teachers and police officers outside of the South East is probably the most anti-populist policy I have ever heard.

Two explanations: she's garbled the messaging and actually just wants civil service cut (which would also mean her numbers are junk) or she wants to a Thatcher and stoke a strike so she can be Iron Lady. Except this is a version of Thatcher where she didn't carefully stage her battles so she would have opponents with bad PR and instead speedruns to mad poll tax era Thatcher.

3. She is still adament about those tax cuts and realised that borrowing was a terrible idea.
