Young Northern WASP who moved to Georgia for college? Clarke County (which contains Athens) ‘trended’ Republican relative to the state from 1972 to 1976, though still had a very big swing to Carter compared to the nation as a whole. That said, my understanding is that UGA was a very different institution back then, much more of a traditional conservative Southern college à la Ole Miss or Alabama, having not yet acquired the liberal, alternative reputation it would go on to gain in the 80s.
