Probably the Atlanta metro version of the kinds of voters in Pitkin County, CO, who voted the same way. But native son effect was strong and it is hard to see many of these kinds of voters at all...

True on both counts, it's possible I suppose that it could also have been an interparty political rival that just had a personal hatred of Carter for some reason.

Young Northern WASP who moved to Georgia for college? Clarke County (which contains Athens) ‘trended’ Republican relative to the state from 1972 to 1976, though still had a very big swing to Carter compared to the nation as a whole. That said, my understanding is that UGA was a very different institution back then, much more of a traditional conservative Southern college à la Ole Miss or Alabama, having not yet acquired the liberal, alternative reputation it would go on to gain in the 80s.
