Either one is slanderous and/or libelous and either one can cause people loss.  There are degrees of slander and libel, and neither should be tolerated.

The morally correct response would be to point out that slander and libel are wrong, period.  Calling someone a "racist" is not as bad as calling someone a pedophile (and by a decent margin), but it's still libelous.  And it's certainly a goal of people to use such labels, no matter how indefensible, to cause people to lose in life (like their career and their employability) and that's no small thing.

If someone calls someone else a pedophile here, they should be subject to a permaban.  It's far worse than calling someone a Nazi or a Racist.  But those labels are damaging, and (around here) almost always unfairly applied.  If someone actually called Joe Republic that, a permaban ought to be on the table.  But Joe Republic ought to use this event to consider his own conduct here.  That's not unreasonable at all.

Edit:  I note that Harry's post was recommended by another poster famous for libelous statements about me here.  Imagine that.
