The map is wrong in the UK's case (and, I suspect, for some of the other countries marked in green). In the first 24 weeks of a pregnancy, "risk to the woman's mental health" is not assessed far beyond the patient stating it would cause enough distress to impose such a risk.

To resize - you want to add a width command into the pre-hyperlink portion of the code. [img width=700]

On abortion, Tilts makes a good point about UK law. Based on that, I wonder if many other countries have a difference between their de facto and de jure position on abortion.

The situation Tilts describes is pretty much how it works in Japan too. Not in Israel, though, which apparently does actually deny abortion requests now and then.

Completely illegal in Madagascar, absolutely no exceptions - what's that about?

Israel just loosened up their law I think 'in response' to the US decision (not sure if it it's just timing)

The changes seem to track with those in the UK which made permanent the COVID arrangements to allow abortion pills to be taken at home.

I think there are murmurings of a move away from the status quo, to try and codify it but British politics is a sh-t show and British feminists are squabbling over the other thing.

I'm surprised the laws in Japan aren't looser. The country is structurally much more pro-choice than the lion's share of Western nations.

Completely illegal in Madagascar, absolutely no exceptions - what's that about?

Apparently, Madagascar has kept unchanged the article 317 of Napoleon’s Penal Code dating back from 1810 strictly prohibiting abortion and inherited from the French colonial period. The article is prohibiting abortion or attempted abortion (without even mentioning mitigating circumstances like rape or incest) and punishing the woman with six months to two years in jail. People who participate to abortions (or attempt to do so) are punished with one to ten years in jail.

Attempts to change it have all failed in the parliament due notably to the strong influence of the Catholic Church, various Protestant and Evangelical/weird pseudo-Evangelical Churches (like the ‘Church of the Apocalypse’ whose founder, a pretty insane man called André Mailhol – his name is deriving from ‘mail’ and ‘holy’ – ran for president in 2018, placing fourth out of thirty-six candidates with 1.3% of the vote) and traditional religious and political leaders.

Nevertheless, abortion is a widespread practice (came across an article mentioning it is easier to have access to an illegal abortionist than to a decent maternity clinic) and a major health problem in Madagascar with some 75,000 clandestine abortions being performed each year according to the health ministry and, still according to the ministry, the consequence of clandestine abortions, often made in dire sanitary conditions (a recent survey founds that 52% of abortions are performed in inadequate places like at home and 31% are realized by persons without any medical training), representing the second cause of maternal death.

The UK is made to look misleadingly restrictive. We basically have free abortion on demand up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, and the small number of cases where a woman would get an abortion after 24 weeks are also largely covered. That’s a lot more liberal than many of the places in blue.

America being a cross between Sweden and Afghanistan is probably an oddly accurate characterization. Tongue

Singapore's extremely liberal abortion law is somewhat related to the fact that our founding prime minister Lee Luan yew was a fan of eugenics.

Alaska being more pro-choice than anywhere outside of the US is quite something.
Portugal and Ireland doing better than the UK certainly isn't what is historically true.
Iran being significantly pro-choice than Wisconsin is big oof.

Eugenics that isn't motivated by race/religion/ethnicity is noble.

I'm surprised that Northern Territory and South Australia aren't more pro-choice.

Jesus. Quite literally. I don’t know how to speak my mind to such things without using several words in could get “canceled” or literally damned for. Hell, for what I’ve been thinking lately I’m surprised I haven’t been suddenly struck by lightning or burst into flames.  I even struggle with that with what’s going on here.

Which is, at most, not a terribly large amount of it?
