Former POTUS Calvin Coolidge was actually discussed as a possible replacement for Hoover in 1932 to save the GOP. What if Hoover had indeed stepped aside for his predecessor? Does the election get closer?

Coolidge obviously would not have returned to the WH since he suddenly died on Jan. 5, 1933, 2 months before the next term started.

He'd probably be blamed for the Great Depression even more than Hoover, but do better in the Northeast

This is a myth as while yes the 1929 crash kicked of the depression , Hoover’s response to it is why it was a depression and not just a recession. Hoover made the decision to let the banks fail in the Fall of 1930 which turned a recession into a depression, he made the decision to appoint Meyer to the fed who then responded by implementing a hard money policy and he signed Smoot-Hawley .

Now you can argue Coolidge would have done the same things but it’s always easier to blame the incumbent who actually did it then a non incumbent who probably does the same things .

He still loses but I’d say by 9-10 points rather than 18

Alright. Coolidge's poor health still damages him.
