I think he'll run for president, but he'll announce after the midterms.
Apparently some close to Trump are saying he wants to announce July 4 in a couple weeks this year though.

Maybe, but the earlier Trump announces a candidacy, the less likely he is to be president. If he announces before the midterms then it will result in less victories for Republicans this year as well.

No, it isn't a wise move politically. If Trump waits until right before or after the midterm elections, it will serve as a major boon for him and the Republican Party.

A long presidential campaign doesn't bode well for Trump because it gives the media more time to target and attack him in the news cycle. The news will be saturated with purported scandal after scandal to bring down Trump's image to the average voter. The January 6 stuff doesn't help much either.

Jonathan Allen reported that the reason Trump wants to jump in early is to pre-empt DeSantis.  The thinking is that if Trump makes enough of a splash with his announcement, then he might be able to deter DeSantis from running at all:

DeSantis of course can't realistically launch his own presidential campaign while he's still running for another term for governor.

That's never deterred him before.

It would drive up Dem turnout in the midterms & cost GOP seats - and Trump would get the blame for it. If he’s going to run I think he declares the day after the midterms.
