Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, and (after doing some research on him after his funeral) Gerald Ford.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee..........WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH?HuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuh??!??

As for the list at hand, I can't think of a single name. Most of Ireland's historical heroes I have major problems with - mainly because they were proto-fascists, proto-communists, theocrats, incompetents (this goes for 95% of them) or simply I just don't know that much about - Wolfe Tone goes into the latter category. I could say something bland like MLK Jr, but I wouldn't really consider him my political hero.

Though better than many of the other Easter Rising\Independance leaders.. but that's not very hard.

I know he did some bad things, mainly the stuff in Ireland, which is probably why you dislike him. However, you must recognize that that's how stuff was done in those days, and I think his legacy--that the King was no longer free to do whatever he wanted--especially when what he wanted was to impose Romanism on the people Wink --outweights that. It was Cromwell and none other who planted the seeds for the American Revolution.

Heroes, eh? Well...

And the Levellers as well o/c (can't find a good picture though). And various other groups along the same general lines.

Now, asking which politicians I admire the most is a different question, obviously.

I'm shocked Al.. I was certain you were going to post Nye Bevan.

Oliver Cromwell, T. Jefferson, Grover Cleveland, Margaret Tatcher, Paul Kruger, and above all, Calvin Coolidge.

Sorry I don't consider mass land-grabbers who impoverished a large majority of people (mainly those Romanists you speak of) mainly out of vendetta and on a whim to Protestant landowners to be a hero. Regardless of what he did elsewhere - and I hate the British Monarchy too - he is evil for that. He planted the seeds for the Irish potato famine 200 years later.

And I say all that as an Irish protestant.

This thread died too soon - it needs to be bumped.

In the meantime I personally have thought of a name which would suit, though hero would be stretching it (I needed to consult Wiki to spell his full name after all) - but ex-Marine Major-General Smedley Butler - writer of "War is a racket" and the man who foiled the "Business plot against FDR"- deserves mention, if only because he is somewhat forgotten today.

My heroes come from a much broader "political" sense. Here's some off the top of my head...

The leaders of the American Revolution/American Founding Fathers (Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, etc.)
The leaders of the French Revolution/Enlightenment (Voltaire, Rousseau, etc.)
Victor Hugo
Theodore Roosevelt
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Barry Goldwater
Gerald Ford
Ronald Reagan
Colin Powell

I've got people from all over the spectrum, quite interesting, right?

Jefferson
Thomas Locke
Thomas Paine
Voltaire
Rousseau
Most of the Enlightenment thinkers actually
Barry Goldwater

That's all I can think of now.

I'm guessing you mean the President of Tranvaal and Afrikaner leader during the Anglo-Boer War?
