It was a dramatic reintroduction to political power in August 2021.

This usually takes a few years to judge, but they seem to be doing a pretty poor job of controlling their insurgencies and quelling protests so far.

Despite their gains, it must sometimes be a bit demoralising to have the roles reversed - there are now photos floating around of National Resistance Front guerrillas standing over a downed Taliban helicopter.

They’re not screwing up as badly as they could be - little public promotion of Al Qaeda, for instance - but I think they’re moving too quickly to enforcing the hardliners’ rules. It will slow down international recognition of their regime and associated foreign aid/funds, and they should have prioritised recognition until they had at least a few states behind them.

Unlike what NRF propaganda would have you believe, the Taliban has basically complete control over the country and the situation is more contained than under the prior Islamic Republic. This is a bad thing given I oppose the Taliban, and they’ve behaved as expected in office which is also bad.

My cousin in the Taliban, Abdul-Azim, is very disappointed that he has not been recognised as a Freedom Fighter.

Obvious HP is obvious but in defence of the Taliban (never thought I'd say that) they have beaten my admittedly rock-bottom expectations from them.

If by that you mean they have been more competent evil this time, then yeah.

Being a bit less genocidal than ISKP also helps.

Not sure if I approve of their fiscal policies, but it's too early to judge.

The Taliban has basically governed exactly like they always have done, I don’t get how “competent” got slapped on lately as they’ve always had an effective functional government over the area that they ruled over, especially compared to the Northern Alliance or the prior Islamic Republic.

This is why claims that the Taliban would collapse early are just plain wrong. Having a functional government is what afghans want and given the loose support most factions have outside of localized geographic areas—like Panjshir or the now gone Hazara enclaves in urban areas—there is no base area for a functional opposition to the Taliban. Only the bums joining ISIS are the real threat to Afghanistan, and they have a very low chance of taking power for reasons obvious.
