After 2 terms of President Mike Dukakis taking America in a liberal direction, who comes out on top?

Dole wins in 1996, but Gore comes back in 2000 and defeats him in a rematch.

Dukakis' administration faces an earlier Republican Revolution in 1990 that carries into the 1992 election cycle, with Republicans overplaying their hand in nominating Pat Buchanan- Dole is a more likely sacrificial lamb for '92 here IMO, but sticking with the premise. Dukakis raises taxes to compensate the massive deficits of the Reagan era and there's a government shutdown in 1993-1994, which prove to be the Democrats' downfall despite a pivot to the right with Al Gore in 1996.

I always imagined a Dukakis Presidency as if he was a White Obama 20 years earlier, and I think that the Electoral College map would mirror that

Senator Bob Dole (R-KS) / Congressman Jack Kemp (R-NY)
Senator Al Gore (D-TN) / Senator Bob Graham (D-FL)

I think that home state bias would just barely have Gore either flip or keep Tennessee Democratic
