Suppose Gore wins in 2000 and beats John McCain in 2004, leaving the path wide open for Romney 2008.

Joe Lieberman gets trounced by John Kerry in the Dem primary.

Which of the two Massachusetts candidates wins?

Obama is probably the only Democrat I can think of who can win in 2008 after two Gore terms. That said Romney is the last person possible the GOP should be nominating in this scenario, but Kerry is a dull, wooden and uninspiring campaigner. He wouldn't win, even against a horribly unsuited for the times candidacy like Romney's.

Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA)/Former Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR) 50%
Senator John Kerry (R-MA)/Senator Blanche Lincoln (R-AR) 48%

Does the recession still hit? But even if not, Mitt Romney should win this one after 16 of Democratic rule.

✓ Former Governor Willard M. Romney (R-MA)/Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN): 312 EV. (50.79%)
Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA)/Governor Timothy M. Kaine (D-VA): 226 EV. (47.22%)

Fmr. Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) / Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) - 347 EVs, 52.7%
Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) / Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) - 188 EVs, 45.4%

Others / Faithless electors - 3 EVs, 1.9%
Romney romps due to the recession.
