I think FDR would've won but Coughlin would've made it close. In this alternate history scenario, Coughlin directs his rage at the FDR administration after cancelling his show, by directing his rage directly at the FDR admin by running on the GOP nomination. He wins based off of name recognition and does very well in certain areas due to his working-class populism resonating well with voters and isolationism remaining high. To balance the ticket and keep solid conservatives on board, he chooses Robert Taft to be his running mate.

Coughlin was born and raised in Canada and not eligible for the presidency. Nevertheless:

President Franklin Roosevelt (D-NY) / Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace (D-IA) ✓
Activist Charles Coughlin (R-MI) / Senator Robert Taft (R-OH)

Does a little better in the Midwest and picks off some Western states on his "Free Silver" monertary reform platform.

Plus, his parents were Irish

Yeah, or at least all but the Great Plains.

The maps in this thread are hilarious. Coughlin wouldn’t come remotely close to beating FDR, or even doing as well as Willkie.

Lmao, why these R nut maps? Franklin Roosevelt would have won easily. Meaning by more than he defeated Willkie.

✓ President Franklin D. Roosevelt (D-NY)/Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace (D-IA): 485 EV. (56.61%)
Activist Charles Coughlin (R-MI)/Senator Robert A. Taft (R-OH): 46 EV. (41.93%)

I didn't realize he was born in Canada. Anyways your map seems to be closer to reality if such a race were to happen, mine was more of a best case scenario.

Change Coughlin to Lindbergh.  How do you think that would have turned out?

Change Coughlin to Lindbergh.  How do you think that would have turned out?

If the charismatic Willkie, who was fierce campaigner, couldn't get past 44.78% of the vote and 82 electoral votes, nobody could beat FDR in 1940. Or even come close to. I guess most Republicans would have done even worse than that.
