Does anyone agree that Gore was the closest ever person to a President?

Plankton5165:
He only lost Florida by 500-something votes. Not 500 pips (that's basically what would happen in the next election), not 500 electoral votes, 500 of us.
Not to mention Bill Clinton was impeached. And had he left office during either of his terms, Gore also would've been President.
He's definitely the closest living person to a President. James G. Blaine was similarly close and died in 1893. In fact, every human who was alive during the sole century he lived in is now deceased.
Suburbia:
Yes.
However, Gore's views cost him as well.

Blaine doesn't count because he did serve as President. Gore is the closest candidate to become President without actually serving.
