What if each region redistricts within its boundaries, and then one senator is elected within a mini-district?  The most-represented state only has a tenth of the voters, so it might actually work.

I actually like Josh's idea.  I think it would help maintain some regional continuity in redistricting.

Josh's plan in no way addresses the problem you are trying to solve.  In fact, I think it makes things worse.

I don't like Hughento's New Zealand plan, either.  I will oppose any measure that elects parties rather than candidates.

StevenNick's original idea is similar to the way the US House of Representatives works.  I could get behind this plan, but a few details need to be worked out.

But really, I don't think the system we have in place now is so terrible.

How does it make it worse? It makes it easy, just a little bit more time...

Because then you have everybody and their brother making maps.  Not that that isn't happening now, anyways....

Have it where you can post one map only, if they post another map then both of their maps get deleted....

Here is josh's poplulation map superimposed on the regions map:

If we went with these population figures, and StevenNick's plan of 1 senator for every 6 voters, using regions, this is what we would end up with:

Northeast Region- 26- 4 senators
Mideast Region- 15- 2 senators
Southeast Region- 8- 1 senator
Midwest Region- 12- 2 senators
Pacific Region- 9- 1 senator

Total- 10 senators

(numbers rounded down where rounding is required)

Here is how this could work for the purpose of staggering the senate elections:

Northeast Region- Nation's term continues until October.  Boss Tweed's term expires in August.  In addition to Boss's seat, there would be 2 new seats up for election- one short term, and one long term.

Mideast Region- Texasgurl and Michael Z's terms both expire in August.   They will have to run against each other, if they both run.  Beet's term continues until October.

Southeast Region- StatesRight's term continues until October.  Harry's term expires in August, and he is not replaced.

Midwest Region- Hughento's term continues until October.  An election for an open seat is held in August.

Pacific Region- JFK's term continues until October. StevenNick's term expires in August, and he is not replaced.

Short-term seats up for election in August: 1
Long-term seats up for election in August: 4
Seats up for election in October: 6

If we do something like this, I think we should establish the membership of the senate as 10 members.  The allocation of representation would be based on percentage of total population.  This works out the same as the numbers I derived using 6 voters for senator.

What if we moved to a more real life system?  Every region would get at least two senators in addition to any extra representation they are entitled to based on population.

I had a feeling Harry and StevenNick wouldn't like it.  Smiley

A more "real life" plan, Steven?  How is this not like real life?  In real life, each state gets a minimum of one representative.   Same thing here.

OH, I see what you mean.  Well here in the forum, we only have one legislative body, not two.  Smiley

This IS how it works in real life.  Every 10 years, congressional seats are re-allocated.  This works out great for some states, not so great for others.

Anyway I don't trust the population numbers that this is based on, but I'll discuss that elsewhere.

The idea directly stems from the European methods of government. Initially, the European plans were meant for smaller nations with either one big district or a few large districts. This plan would probably not work best with large nations with large states, such as the United States. The American method would probably be a good method for Russia, who uses a federacy-influenced parliament-type system (basically a parliament, they have the Duma like Poland). Since this is very similar to what the forum is like, in that we have a smaller population, it would probably be helpful if we had this form of representation.

This idea is certainly up for change, but the basic form might be helpful.

Using the Registered voter list as the basis for population, this is what I end up with:

Northeast- 38
Mideast- 23
Southeast- 9
Midwest- 15
Pacific- 17

Total- 102

If senators were allocated on pecent-to-total, the numbers I arrived at previously remain the same except that the Midwest loses one seat to the Pacific region.

Could you give me a list of names? That seems a bit high. Also, Virginia belongs in the South.

List of names?  Here you go:  Registered voter list

As for Virginia belonging in the south, this map is our actual regions (that we elect governors to).  I have other proposals for districts based on these numbers in this thread.
