What makes this really remarkable is that activists tend way more Trumpy than primary voters as a whole. There's a real opening and if anyone could do it, it's DeSantis.

Just compare it: the 78-year old fat slob who crashes weddings to bitch about ballots against the 46-year old Iraq vet with an attractive young family who's succeeded at pretty much he's done in his life.

Actually no, the exact opposite I'd bet. Activist types are more likely to be like the National Review writer archetype, or someone like Matt Walsh (who isn't anti-Trump but also not particularly "Trumpy" either.) Trump's base was low-propensity conservatives, who often didn't vote in GOP primaries but Trump inspired them too. The sort of people who go to straw polls like this in 2016 were mostly for Cruz or Kasich.

The sooner the GOP dumps Trump the better for everyone.

It seems to me like the “intellectual” country club conservative types tend to go for DeSantis or (more rarely) Pence in these types of polls rather than Trump. Trump’s base of support tends to come from the white working class in the Rust Belt and in the south.

There is just as big of a disconnect between these factions in the modern GOP as there is between moderates and progressives in the Democratic Party. It’s just not as dramatic as they both have the same goals, the only difference is in the presentation.
