Or was “imperialism” a deragatory term like it is today?

The short answer is yes with variation depending on time, place, and context.

In Britain absolutely, as one may imagine. Don't know about the United States but I would imagine so there also, if less popular.

Teddy Roosevelt certainly did.

That said, it was basically going out of style by the end of the 1900s, after it turned out that the actual fighting part of Roosevelt's Gunboat Diplomacy and occupying places wasn't popular. Taft onwards tried downplaying the taking over by open military force aspects. (Someone's gonna bring up the 1910s invasion of Haiti and yes I am aware of it)

The demonization of imperialism is a pretty awful political development in my opinion. Unless it’s a word like “Nazi”, no political label should hold a negative connotation first and foremost.

You know how sometimes, when a dog craps inside, the owner will drag the dog to the pile of crap, point his face in it, and shout "No! No! Bad dog!"

I feel like I am obligated to do that to you with this post.

IIRC, Roosevelt preferred the term "expansionist".

Imperialism had to led to spread of so many successful and great ideas.

Imperialism is pretty much just when any country extends its influence and power over another. It’s not always bad, and in fact has in many cases been good (use of modern and successful medicine in many underdeveloped countries, for example, is because of imperialism).
