Quote
ZURICH, March 3 (Reuters) - Switzerland voted decisively to increase pension payments for the elderly in a referendum on Sunday, as concern over living costs and support for a stronger social safety net trumped questions about how to afford it.
Provisional official results published by the government showed over 58% of voters backed the extra pension, a 13th monthly payment per year, with less than 42% against, a more emphatic victory than final polls had suggested.

This would probably be less of an issue if they weren't also blatantly hostile to immigration increases.

This is certainly not true anymore (if it ever really was beyond rhetoric). In 2023, Switzerland had the 18th highest rate of net migration per capita of any country in the world, and has consistently been in the world top 20 on that metric for the past two decades. Consequently, 30% of its population are immigrants; in Europe, only Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and Monaco rank higher.

I suppose that's a fair, but they do still regularly make the SVP the largest party.

Giving money to ‘deserving’ people is something that carries a lot of support even among more right wing voters. People who get pensions are viewed as having worked hard so we should give them the reward they’ve earned.
