BACKGROUND
Sail Grand Prix or more commonly known as SAIL GP was founded & formed on October 3rd 2018 by former America's Cup Winners Larry Ellison & Russell Coutts with the aim to create an annual Sailing Championship with High Performance Boats driven by High Performance Sailors.
The Mantra of this cutting-edge annual Sailing Circuit is
„POWERED BY NATURE, DRIVEN BY PURPOSE“

SEASON 1 (2019)

Season 1 of SAIL GP consisted of 6 Teams and 5 Events. It was won by the AUSTRALIA SAIL GP TEAM skippered by Tom Slingsby over the JAPAN SAIL GP TEAM skippered by Nathan Outteridge.

SEASON 2 (2021/2022)
Source: SAIL GP
Season 2 of SAIL GP consisted of 8 Teams and 8 Events. The DENMARK SAIL GP TEAM presented by ROCKWOOL & the NEW ZEALAND SAIL GP TEAM joined the League as 7th & 8th Team respectivly while the SPAIN SAIL GP TEAM replaced the CHINA SAIL GP TEAM in the League.
Season 2 was orginally scheduled to take place in 2020 but the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic made it impossibe to race around the world after the Sydney Event 2020 concluded.
Season 2 was eventually restarted on April 24/25 2021 in Bermuda with the GREAT BRITAIN SAIL GP TEAM & UNITED STATES SAIL GP TEAM having new Skippers & Helmsman in Sir Ben Ainslie and Jimmy Spithill.
On June 16th 2021 SAIL GP Organizers announced one additional Event for Season 2 to be raced on Sydney Harbour December 17/18 2021. Sydney already hosted two Sail GP Events in 2019 & 2020.
On August 16th 2021 SAIL GP Organizers announced that the New Zealand SailGP slated for January 29/30 was on hold because SailGP Staff & Teams were unable to reach an Agreement with the New Zealand Central Government about MIQ (Managed Isolation Quarantine) Facilities and therefore could not gain Entry into the Country. Later that Day New Zealand Media confirmed that the Event was cancelled.

Season 2 eventually concluded on March 26/27 2022 in San Francisco, California at the Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix with the AUSTRALIA SAIL GP TEAM being crowned Champions for a second consecutive Season beating out the JAPAN SAIL GP TEAM & the UNITED STATES SAIL GP TEAM in the „GRAND FINAL“

SailGP though is different than the America's Cup. It's an Annual Championship much like Soccer, NBA, NHL, Formula 1. Get ready for some excitement starting Saturday.
