Here is the list:
Arkansas
Louisiana
Kentucky
Missouri
Montana
Tennessee
West Virginia

I thought Missouri was believable because Obama almost won it in 2008.

And Arkansas, well, Bill Clinton was governor there.

None of the others were battleground states in 2020, neither was Missouri for that matter!

Montana was pretty close in 2008 and had been in play for that whole election season.

Huckabee probably would've lost it...but he'd win Indiana.

States that last voted Democratic (for POTUS) in the 1970s:

Texas
Mississippi
South Carolina
Alabama

... 1960s:

Alaska
Kansas
Utah
Nebraska (at large)
Idaho
Wyoming
North Dakota
South Dakota
Oklahoma

And of course, the converse:
States that last voted Republican (for POTUS) in the 1980s:

California
Vermont
New York
Maine (at large)
Massachusetts
Connecticut
Rhode Island
Delaware
Maryland
New Jersey
Illinois
Oregon
Washington
Hawaii

... 1970s:

Minnesota

I truly wonder how many lifetimes it would take for some of these states to vote the other way and what kind of coalitions could emerge in the future... lol

All these states except Montana are Southern or semi-Southern.

What's interesting is how well Clinton vibed in Louisiana, winning it big in '96, but then Gore wasn't even competitive there in 2000.

Many of the states that last voted Republican in 1972, 1984, and 1988 will vote for Donald Trump easily in 2024.

Gore still did way better in the state than any Democrat after him (as was the case in several southern states). Hard to believe Louisiana and West Virginia were more Democratic than the nation in ‘96.

I wonder what caused the Republican swings in states that voted for Clinton by more than 50% (and therefore can’t be explained by Perot-Bush voters). I doubt it was the Lewinsky affair considering that Republicans didn’t make any gains in those states’ House or Senate delegations in the 1998 midterms.
