The most "moderate" Republican justice was always going to be fetishised by the pundit class and see higher approval ratings with the other side as a result, but there's a bit more to why Democratic voters have such a (relative) fondness for Roberts. He's a master of the meaningless civility politics so many PMC types crave:

Edit: this post could be a bit misleading - see lfromnj's on the next page for context.

This is probably going to help Republicans in the midterms.

Only Thomas wrote that those old cases should be overturned? That's good news actually.

"Lol you libtards are being hysterical, they're not going to overturn Griswold, Lawrence, or Obergefell."

This is the beginning of that.

Only Thomas sharing this opinion is probably good news at this point.

Come on. The blame is more on the DNC and the party establishment, who did a terrible campaign in 2016 and insisting on running Hillary, despite her being a terrible and incompetent candidate.

The blame is also on Ginsberg, who refused to step down under Obama and insisted on staying on the court until her death, to sate her enormous ego.

It is much more likely to have the opposite effect.  People who are angry are more motivated to vote than those who are satisfied/happy.

Lol at the idea that reversing a decision that said the voters do not have a say in what abortion law is through their elected officials is judicial activism .

And there you have it. We'll see how this turns out, but at least there are states that people can go to for abortion services, and there is also medical abortion if women choose to go that route.

Make no mistake, women will find a way to have an abortion if she deems it necessary. That's a fact.

Giant middle finger to every Trump supporter. The same to anyone who didn’t vote for Hillary.

You are responsible for this, even if you are pro-choice.

Yeah, this won't matter at all. It's not like there are poor pregnant women or anything.

Why would it be surprising that Thomas wants to overturn Lawrence and Obergefell?  He dissented in these cases.

This is why I'm disappointed they just left it to the states. Having said that, I'm sure many mothers in states which protect life who would otherwise have been pressured into abortion will choose against it now, so this is still a big step forward.

Hopefully in the future there'll be a case to legally recognize fetal personhood.

Poor pregnant women in red states have long been the most politically invisible demographic. If this changes anytime soon, it'll probably only be for a short while post-Roe.
