In 2022, most of the usual moderates who are targeted by tea party types are primaried out or retire. In the next couple years of Congress, as the GOP and McCarthy have the majority, there are not many outspoken moderates. Representatives like Valadao and Fitzpatrick vote moderate, but they are not outspoken and so do not attract much attention.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas becomes the main "anti-far-right" representative in the House. Despite voting with McCarthy on basically every vote and being heavily critical of Biden (and appearing on Hannity every other day to attack Biden for being too "weak" on foreign policy), he often ends up publicly criticizing far-right Republicans who say controversial things.
It started in 2021 when he criticized MTG and called the Freedom Caucus "grifters", then he accused freshman representatives Joe Kent and Anthony Sabatini of "being in the pocket of Russia", and more and more. His main target has been the Freedom Caucus, of which he says "makes Republicans look like lunatics".
He has also publicly taken stances against Trump's 2020 claims even after the former President began his widely expected 2024 campaign. Trump has not endorsed Crenshaw and has criticized him on Twitter, but has not endorsed any opponent.
State Senator Brandon Creighton, a tea party conservative in the mold of Jim Jordan or Scott Perry whose district covers most of TX-02 announced his intention to run against Crenshaw in the primary. While Crenshaw got 74% in his 2022 primary against a barely-funded nobody who announced late, this was to be a real challenge.
As there were not much targets for "America First" primaries in 2024 and Crenshaw had alienated and angered most Freedom Caucus members by making personal attacks over the last few years, most members of the caucus endorsed Creighton and has helped him fundraise and campaign for him.
Crenshaw has become a national figure and is seen as a "rising star" in the GOP, he has also raised a LOT of money. But many in his district see him as too moderate and he has a serious primary challenge on his hands.

Who wins and by how much?
