He’s gonna try and win as an independent isn’t he? Wouldn’t be surprised if he “endorses Trump” or something to try and do so. No one ever said Manchin wasn’t a good politician, so I’ll give him that.
I kinda feel Manchin hoped that Blankenship would win so he could get back in, and set up the infrastructure to do so. Then Blankenship lost because Manchin didn't realize how hated he was, but the latter didn't want his time and money going to waste, so he went independent and will jump back in soon in a vain attempt to keep his job.

Or maybe he just wanted to be independent in his last few months.
Remember when Amash became a libertarian in 2020 before he retired?

I think Amash planned to run but saw he'd lose.

I see him maybe trying to pull a Lowell Weicker and take back the Governorship as an indy, before finally hanging up his hat. But does he still have enough sway or appeal in WV to pull it off, even if he wanted to?

Good riddance. Even if his replacement is Justice, I'm just glad Manchin will be gone in January.

This is a terrible way of looking at it. When Democrats struggle to win Senate majorities for the next 20 years, we will look back fondly on the days when we actually held a Senate seat in WEST VIRGINIA. It's a miracle that in this day and age we still hold a Senate seat in the 2nd most Republican state. I will certainly miss this.

This feels like it has been done out of spite given how close he is to the end of his Senate career. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s sucking up to Trump for a job should the latter be back in the Oval Office next year. Given he’s nearly 77 I really don’t know why he’s not just winding it all down quietly prior to a very affluent retirement. Then again there are so many others we could ask that about…

No shot in Hell he's sucking up to Trump. Listen to his interviews. He does not want Trump back in the Oval Office.

I have to ask, assuming Manchin goes through with an insane independent run, didn't he already file paperwork in 2022 or something, meaning he can declare at any time? Or does he need to refile if he goes as an independent?

I just feel like it’s too much to be a coincidence, Drumpf getting convicted of a crime then Manchin walking out on the Dems less than 24 hours later. Kind of contributes to the narrative R’s are spinning of “Dems going too far” (as if this is really anything more than a case of Drumpf getting his just desserts; they’d have us believe Biden masterminded the whole process from day one). If he’d left the party a week earlier or even a month later I might have given him the benefit of the doubt.

Also he wouldn’t be the first person to do a complete U-turn on Drumpf; both JD Vance and Bernie Moreno hated him at the beginning and look at them now.

So, Glenn Elliot is (based on what I heard) running a decently competent, active campaign. While it's basically hopeless, even if Justice sits back, might he at least outdo Kamala by a decent amount, maybe even push the contest below 20%?

Huh, this is interesting. I wonder if Justice regrets running, now that Manchin retired and Republicans didn’t need Justice to win.

I assume Manchin only quit because Justice was running and Manchin either didn't want to lose or didn't want to fight his friend to keep his job.

I guess this helps Elliot a bit, not that it'll matter in the end.

This does make me worried about Justice dying, though. Hope he doesn't and retires in 2030.

From what I understand Justice's health is pretty bad and he had some intense open heart surgery not long ago. It's generally unfortunate to see so many Freshman Senators in safe states (of both parties) being so old - see Peter Welch in Vermont too (though his health seems a bit better).

Yeah, heard about that to a while back. As you said, it's a real shame.

So if Riley Moore (who is effectively congressman-elect for half the state) comes into the Senate, would that be the first time that both member's of a state's Senate delegation are related?

Is he being set up to run in 2030 or something?

Anyway, I would say so, but I'm sure some southern state had this happen in New Deal era or late 19th century.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is. He'll only be 50 at that time plus he's from a political dynasty and is on good terms with pretty much every ideological wing of the GOP.

Maybe Justice's dog could take over if something happens to him.

That's the kind of political figure that can finally unite the country.

They bear something of a resemblance, too.

I find that most people look like their dogs.

I have a maltese, if you were ever curious what I look like.

While Manchin and Justice were once allies, I think they have a pretty strained relationship now. Justice initially endorsed Manchin for reelection in 2018, and maintained that he’d support him even after switching to the GOP. Then Justice switched his endorsement to Patrick Morrisey, going back on his word.

Justice also appointed Manchin’s wife as Secretary of Education and the Arts, but then fired her from the position. So I imagine Joe Manchin didn’t like that.

Thanks for the info, seems it wasn't that.

So theoretically Jim Justice could appoint an interim Senator for 10 days until he takes office, correct? I doubt it happens, but maybe it could?

He could do that, but like you said it'd be pointless. Just because when he gets sworn in on 1/13 it'd be near the tailend of the Biden Presidency and really nothing of note will get passed after his original swearing in date of 1/3 other than the usual name a post office after a dead guy law.
