Low A tier. Despite what many will say, the War of 1812 was necessary and justified, and for our intents and purposes it was a victory. He gets serious props for completely maintaining civil liberties during a domestic war. His one huge flaw was his terrible management of his cabinet. He kept Armstrong on for way too long despite being floridly incompetent and self-interested, and for a while James Monroe had to run two departments at once. A better secretary of war much earlier on could have made the war go much more smoothly, and Armstrong's tomfoolery could very well have lost us the war.
