Once Sweden and Finland have been admitted they don't really need to honor the deal anymore, don't they?

So around what date/time will Finland and Sweden OFFICIALLY become NATO members?

Yesterday I read an assessment that the process could take six to eight months, perhaps less.

So early 2023, probably.

There are wildly differing views on what the recent memorandum signed in Madrid between Turkey and Finland/Sweden means. The Turks are bragging that they forced Finland/Sweden into their demands. While at least in Finland commentators are saying that the memorandum does not mean that Finland would change its laws or extradite anyone to Turkey.

Some details on the "terrorists" that Turkey wants Finland to extradite:

  • One made jokes about Erdogan on social media.
  • One is wanted for downloading an encrypted app often used by Kurdish groups, even as it is unknown what he did with it.
  • A few people are wanted for throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Turkish embassy in Helsinki years ago. But they were already convicted for that in Finnish courts and completed their sentence. But Turkey wants to put them on trial for the second time for the same crime.

Turkey still wants these people extradited, and has similar demands from Sweden. So despite the memorandum, they might still delay ratification.

It's not over until the fat lady sings. Turkey isn't likely to flip again, but there's nothing stopping e.g. Hungary from throwing a spanner in the works as late as the final ratification stage (which Finland and Sweden are weeks away from, if not months).

I'd assume Biden and Stoltenberg (and most of NATO really) will try to speed things up as much as possible. And tbf Orban doesn't seem to have it it for NATO in the way he does for the EU.

Finland has announced that their and Sweden's ratification protocols have just been signed, meaning the standard membership action plans and their associated delays have been circumvented. The last step remaining is ratification by all 28 members' legislatures.

The timeline is probably short enough to avoid the extradition cases being resolved beforehand - to be clear, these are likely to end in rejection of extradition requests. Those will anger Turkey, but it won't matter if Finland and Sweden are already in NATO. The remaining wildcard is Hungary.

Canada ratified it already, as Canada doesn't require the involvement of the Legislature, it seems (through it already voted unanimously to encourage other countries and Canada's government to make them enter NATO as quick as possible last month). Foreign minister Mélanie Joly signed it.

Same thing for Denmark it seems and Germany will consider it on Friday.

The German Bundestag was the third parliament of a NATO member country (after Estonia and Canada) to approve Finland's and Sweden's request for NATO membership.
All Bundestag factions voted Yes on the membership application - but one. Take a guess at which party isn't fond of Finland and Sweden... Roll Eyes

The alliance of civilized peace-loving countries against Russia can only be a positive.

My fear is what happens when another Trump, ie. Desantis, someday takes the helm of the US again.

The Trump administration negotiated the Afghan peace deal in the first place. Biden was the one who messed up the withdrawal. Trump also brokered the Abraham Accords and had multiple summits with North Korea. If Obama had achieved even a tenth of what Trump had done in office, they'd have given him a second Nobel Peace Prize.

Whatever Trump did he did because of his ego and the long-term goals of his alt-right advisors. Do I agree with the basic premise of things like the Abraham Accords? Sure. Do I agree with the likely long-term motives of his minions who brokered it? Not even slightly. Trump himself may have been stopped from starting a war by his "deep-state" cabinet compadre's but it'd be foolish to describe Trump himself as having an ethos of peace / world stability.

German Bundestag formally ratified the admission of Finland and Sweden today, joining a few other parliaments who already did that. Remember that all legislative bodies of the 30 member states need to approve admission.

The governing coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP voted in favor, as did CDU/CSU opposition and parts of AfD. Only Die Linke went against, which is hardly a surprise given their dislike for NATO.

Any guesses on who will vote against the accession treaty in the US? Paul and Lee feel like automatics given they voted against Montenegro. Does anyone join them?

The usual suspects: MTG, Gosar, Tlaib, Omar, among a few others. Just the worst members of congress from both parties.

I really hope for you that your comrade PUTP, who herself staunchly opposes Finland's and Sweden's accession to NATO, won't get to read your post...

House doesn't vote on treaties.

Is this being done with the formal constitutional treaty method? That is so rarely used.
