Probably a lot in Iowa (which very nearly voted that pattern).

Pretty common in Elliott County, KY, and a handful elsewhere in Appalachia.

Most of them flipped between 2004 and 2008 though. Elliott was especially an anomaly for holding out until after 2012.

The above areas plus some in the rural areas of the South, particularly in North Carolina.

Remember that Trump flipped many counties where previously flourishing manufacturing/resource extraction industries had declined and/or vanished, and in some cases those counties hadn’t voted for a Republican for President since Reagan or earlier. I bet there areas contain substantial numbers of these kind of voters.

I wasn’t sure how many elections back to go in the thread title. I wanted to establish a pattern of voting Democratic but not too many FDR voters were still alive in 2016.
