Scott Mo: Another Go?
An Australian Federal Election Mini-game by DKrol

It is early April, 2022. The world seems to be emerging from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. War is raging in Ukraine, sparked by Vladimir Putin. After years of sustained growth, world economies are starting to get rattled and withdraw. The climate is only getting hotter and more violent.

This is the background upon which Scott Morrison has been forced to call an election. Since shocking the media and the world with his come-from-behind victory in 2019, Morrison has had his fair share of bumps along the road. From vacationing during the worst bush fires in Australia’s history to a weak repose sexual abuse allegations in Canberra, many have commented that the Prime Minister seems to lack “the compassionate gene”. Even his own Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, has been critical of Morrison.

Labor are not without their own troubles. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, despite being in politics since 1996, is still introducing himself to the Australian pubic. People simply struggle to form an opinion about the former Infrastructure Minister. Morrison has framed the election from the starting gun as a choice between a government Australians know, and a future they don’t. There’s also the long shadow of Beazley’s Black Hole still hanging over the party: during a time of such increased cost of living, could the Australian people put Labor back in power?

Although they only hold one seat in the House of Representatives, Adam Bandt and the Greens will be looking to flip a few seats where they came close in 2019 and hold the balance of power in Canberra. Could the devastating floods and fires of the last few years give the Greens the push they need to see their support surge?

In the age of COVID-19 disinformation, Craig Kelly hopes that his United Australia Party will be able to play off the anti-lockdown movements to carve out a base of support in the House - seemingly at the expense of the Coalition. Also joining Kelly in the lane, however, are Robbie Katter and Katter’s Australia Party and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party. Whether or not any of those parties can make significant gains and tip the scales in Parliament remains to be seen.

Welcome to the 2022 Australian Federal Election.

Rules

1. This is meant to be a fast-paced mini game, intended to be completed before the IRL Australian Election on May 21. Therefore turns will last for five days and cover two weeks of the campaign, and extensions will be extremely rare. The first turn will run from April 12, 2022 until April 17, 2022 and cover the campaign period from April 10 until April 23.

2. Players will post their campaign schedules each turn at a minimum. The more detailed these schedules are the more weight they will carry. Players can also create advertisements, post speeches, and give interviews or media quotes. The more a player gives, the more a player will get (assuming the quality is appropriate), as long as they comply with their campaign points (see below).

3. Each player will begin with a certain number of campaign points (CPs) based on their results in the 2019 Federal Election. Each turn, each player will initially gain half of their initial CPs back, although that number may increase or decrease depending on how the campaign is run.

CPs can be spent as below:

Open Local Campaign Office: 10 CPs
Door Knocking Campaign in a Division: 7 CPs
Visit by the Leader to a Division: 5 CPs
Major Speech by the Leader: 5 CPs
Run a National Advertisement: 5 CPs
Commission an Internal Poll: Between 5 and 2 CPs, depending on quality desired
Meet and Greet by the Leader: 3 CPs
Major Interview by the Leader: 3 CPs
Run a State-wide Advertisement: 3 CPs
Local Interview by the Leader: 2 CPs
Other: At Discretion of GM

4.  At the end of each turn, the GM will post an analysis of each player’s turn, as well as polling and other news events. News events may also be posted across the length of the turn but all players will be able to amend their turns to respond to said news event if they’ve posted their finalized schedules before the news event was posted.

I'd want Labor, but SO19 already claimed the ALP.

Sure thing!

I'd want Labor, but SO19 already claimed the ALP.

I’ll give you Labor, since you were the first person to express your interest in the game and the first to claim Labor in this thread.

I was tempted to take the Nationals but I fear that would grate too much on S019.

Can I asked what the in game benefits are to having a local campaign office as it is 10CP?

I will take either the ONP or KAP.

The local campaign offices are the best way to target support in a specific seat. They are also a game-long benefit once you open them, rather than a one-time boost.

I will post the first turn this afternoon when I get home. We’ll start the turn right away so we can get going down our own path.

I want to take a second to clarify something I’ve been asked about the rules.

For polls, the maximum number of questions a single poll can ask is 5. You also need to specify what you want the questions to be, or what specific seats you want the poll of.

For interviews, once I receive your CP spending plan, I will post a single multi-part question per interiors in the main game thread for you to respond to, since such an interview would be in the public domain.

I just want to let everyone know that I am working on the new turn and I am trying my best to get it out tonight. Work has been crazy this last week. I am also finding that my knowledge of Australian politics is not as strong as I thought it was, despite being a regular listener to various podcasts on the topic.

Is the Senate being taken into consideration for the election results?

IRL UAP has spammed Adverts on Youtube. I see this ad at least once a day I reckon.

Interesting.
Is it too late to do my first turn?

IMO you should just post anyway and the GM can determine if you're good or not.
GM might just impose some debuffs to your turn.

I’m sorry but I can’t GM this game. I just don’t have the knowledge base to process these turns with any kind of meaningfulness. I’ve tried for days to write something and nothing seems to be for any particular reason.

I’m sorry I got people’s hopes up and then let you down.
