12TH JANUARY 2022
During the 2nd Episode of „MOVING PARTS“ we hear from INEOS Britannia Chief Technical Officer James Allison. Allison has a Dual Role having been also the Technical Head of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team
Source: Cameron Gregory/INEOS Britannia

James Allison talks about the incredibly amount of overlap there is between an America's Cup Team and a Formula 1 Team and he hopes that Mercedes' Expertise will help bring the America's Cup back to Great Britain.

“An America’s Cup team may only be about 10% the size of a major Formula 1 team, but there is a lot of similarity in the difficulty of the challenge. Everything has to be right, or nothing is right. There are a lot of areas where we can contribute strongly from the beginning. We’re not bad at aerodynamics here, and it’s not a huge stretch into hydrodynamics. We’re also pretty good at structural design, structural engineering and we have a wide range of material science backing up our work here to date. There’s so many areas of overlap where we will be able to contribute to this campaign working alongside our experienced America’s Cup colleagues and hopefully at the end, we can produce something we will all be proud of.”

The AC40 is a very important Boat Class not only for the 37TH AMERICA'S CUP CYCLE but also beyond. It will be an „All-Purpose Boat“ which can be used in the future.

3RD FEBRUARY 2022
In a new Series called „BOLD PROTOCOL“ INEOS BRITANNIA, the Challenger of Record for the 37th America's Cup looks at the Key Elements of this new Innovative Protocol.
In PART 1 we hear from Senior Sailor & Tactician Giles Scott
Source: INEOS Britannia
Source: INEOS Britannia
Source: Carlo Borlenghi/ACE36

The CV of INEOS BRITANNIA Senior Sailor & Tactician Giles Scott:

  • 2-Time Olympic Gold Medalist in the Finn Class (2016 & 2020). The 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021.
  • 6-Time Gold Medalist of the World Championships in the Finn Class
  • 3-Time Gold Medalist of the European Championships in the Finn Class
  • 4th America's Cup Campaign (2013 with Luna Rossa Challenge; 2017 with Land Rover BAR, 2021 with INEOS TEAM UK, 2024 with INEOS Britannia)

GILES SCOTT looks at 4 Key Elements of the new AC Protocol from a Sailors Perspective:

  • 2nd Generation of the AC75 Class (The Class is maintained for AC37 & AC38)
  • Crew Numbers + Cyclors (The Crew for the 37th America's Cup will be reduced from 11 to 8 Sailors). Grinders or Cyclors - A Difficult Call?
  • Weight Reduction! By removing the bowsprit of the Boats and reducing Crew Members the new AC75 will lose weight which will make it easier to get on the foils in light winds. However the downside of it is that there will be no option of a Code Zero Headsail
  • The new AC40 Class + the Women's & Youth America's Cups

“I am interested to see if we are able to take F1 tools and apply them to the construction of the AC75. Building a fast car isn’t only about the subject, but includes the processes, methodologies and standard to which you work. If you work to a high standard, you should be able to create a great result.”

INEOS BRITANNIA Team Principal & CEO Sir Ben Ainslie on the „STATE OF PLAY“ for the 37th America's Cup
Source: INEOS Britannia

When I signed off last April, we were just off the back of New Zealand’s defence of the America’s Cup. As Challenger of Record, we had the responsibility of agreeing the protocol and class rule for the next edition of the Cup, AC37. The deadline for announcing the protocol was November 2021 and you’d be forgiven for thinking that eight months would be ample time to get our heads together with the Kiwis to agree a pathway. The reality was, while we agreed on so many key areas there were inevitably a few points where competitive instinct and fairness caused something of a stalemate. We finally agreed on the document at the eleventh hour, but it’s a protocol and set of rules that both teams are proud to stand by.

In PART 2 we hear from Chief Operating Officer David Endean

Source: Cameron Gregory/INEOS Britannia

Along with CEO Sir Ben Ainslie & the INEOS Britannia Design Team COO DAVID ENDEAN has one of the most important Jobs for the Challenger of Record, running the Day-to-Day Operation of the 100+ Member strong INEOS Britannia Team. David was responsible for providing safe passage for BRITANNIA 2, the Race Boat which competed in Auckland, from Portsmouth via London-Stansted, Dubai and Indonesia to Auckland which was no small feet to pull off given the COVID Restrictions the world encountered in 2020.

Here David looks at 5 Key Elements from the new AC37 Protocol from the Perspective of „DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS“:

  • Writing the Protocol
  • Cost Savings - An important Part to encourage new Teams to participate
  • Sailing Period Restrictions - Another important Part to level the playing Field. New Teams can start sailing an older 1st Generation AC75 from the 17TH OF JUNE 2022 while existing America's Cup Teams will have to wait until SEPTEMBER 17TH 2022
  • The new Hydrogen powered Chase Boat (Each Challenger has to built one)
  • The Importance of Team - Team Building

WHAT'S NEXT?

David Endean hopes to have everything in order & operational by the end of 2022 when existing Teams allowed to start sailing.

17TH MARCH 2022
ON THE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR HISTORIC AMERICA'S CUP WIN IN AUCKLAND DEFENDER EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND LOOKS BACK
Source: Emirates Team New Zealand/Carlo Borlenghi/ACE

Chief Operating Officer Kevin Shoebridge with his thoughts on the 1-Year Anniversary:

“When you do look at what the team has achieved in the year since we won the 36th America’s Cup, it is quite astonishing really. A lot gets overlooked with outside distractions, but the achievements so far are already pushing innovation and technology of the team and the New Zealand marine sector globally. When you are buried in it and getting the work done it just feels like the team is operating as it does normally. Focused on the tasks that lead towards the end goal and only objective of winning.”

The obvious outstanding piece of the puzzle that remains for the Defender in what has been a huge year is the venue announcement for the 37th America’s Cup. Perhaps the one aspect that has more consistent work put into it, and one that has had more attention than anything.

“Being the Defender there are always going distractions which are aimed to disrupt. It has always been this way in the America’s Cup. But when the team is doing what it does well and focusing on what they must do to both win and grow the sport of sailing it isn’t hard to remain positive and focused.” Said Shoebridge.

“The venue is getting there… it’s the next cab off the rank.”

AC37 HOST CITY ANNOUNCEMENT
ROYAL NEW ZEALAND YACHT SQUADRON/EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND SELECT „BARCELONA“ TO HOST THE 37TH AMERICA'S CUP IN 2024
Source: americascup
Source: Ramon Vilalta/americasup

After over a year of negotiating and a failed attempt to keep the America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and their Team Emirates Team New Zealand announced on MARCH 29TH 2022, two Days before their self-imposed Deadline to announce the Host Venue for AC37 that the Capital of Spanish Province Catalonia, Barcelona would host the oldest International Sporting Trophy in 2024.

Emirates Team New Zealand CEO GRANT DALTON on the selection of Barcelona as Host Venue for the 37th America's Cup:

“Barcelona really is one of the most recognised cities in the world so to have the ability to host the most recognised sailing event in the world is hugely exciting. As Defender of the America’s Cup, we have always felt the responsibility to grow the event, the audience, and the sport of sailing on a global scale and certainly having the event hosted in a significant city such as Barcelona will allow us to propel the growth trajectory on the global sporting stage. When thinking ahead to the 37th America’s Cup and the AC75’s racing within a few hundred metres of the Barcelona beach, waterfront, and race village fan engagement zones it will be nothing less than spectacular.”

Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Commodore AARON YOUNG on the selection of Barcelona as Host Venue for the 37th America's Cup:

“Barcelona holds a very special place in New Zealand’s sailing history and we remember with pride the success of our 1992 Olympic Games sailing team and four medal result”, said Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Aaron Young. “Barcelona will be a stunning venue for the America’s Cup racing and the Women’s and Youth regattas, and we look forward to defending the America’s Cup there in 2024 as we work to promote and grow the sport of sailing around the world. There are also significant opportunities for our New Zealand marine industry, trade and sailors. Our members will enjoy exclusive benefits and travel options to Barcelona, and we anticipate a large delegation of Club members travelling in support of our Team in 2024”.

Mayor of Barcelona ADA COLAU on the selection of Barcelona as Host Venue for the 37th America's Cup:

"It is great news for Barcelona! This should serve to promote the city to the world after the pandemic, to benefit Barcelona’s tradition of this sport in a city by the sea and in addition, to boost the emerging sector of innovation and technology, linked to nautical activities. I want to thank all the public and private institutions for their support and complicity in this project”.

President of the Port of Barcelona DAMIA CALVET on the selection of Barcelona as Host Venue for the 37th America's Cup:

"We have made Port Vell available to the city and the country to be able to celebrate an America's Cup that projects Barcelona to the world and that has innovation and sustainability as its flagship. We will make the most of the infrastructures that we already have, we will boost the economy and employment and finally, we will leave an enduring legacy".

President of Spanish Province Catalonia PERE ARAGONES on the selection of Barcelona as Host Venue for the 37th America's Cup:

"It is an historic sporting event, which has a great projection worldwide at an international level, economically and for tourism”. “The America’s Cup is not just an isolated sporting activity and offers significantly more than that to the Host Venue. It is an event that it will generate a return across many platforms over years and will leave a very important legacy for Catalonia. I am very satisfied because for the first time, the America’s Cup will also include a specific Women’s America’s Cup regatta in Barcelona.”

“What next? How can we keep pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology utilizing the people and technology available at ETNZ?”

GEOFF SENIOR, Project Manager for the Hydrogen Powered Foiling Chase Boat:

“We were basically told something as audacious as Chase Zero would take 3.5- 4 years, but this has effectively taken us just over 9 months.”

“We certainly weren’t expecting to be working so intently straight after AC36. But I guess that’s just part of our culture and how we work best at Emirates Team New Zealand so it’s pretty exciting to get to this stage, a huge milestone for the team.

It was a big effort to get the boat built at our build facility and then it's been a massive effort from the fit-out team here at the base, just getting all these powertrain components in and all the respective bits of hardware. I don't think we realize how significant it is. I think there's almost no other boats like this around. The next boats like this are still a long way away, so I think once it's in the water and running, we will realize just how important it is on the world stage.”

NEERAJ LALA, CEO Toyota NZ:

“We are supporting our long-term partners, Emirates Team New Zealand by supplying them the hydrogen fuel cell system as a way to investigate the different applications of this carbon neutral technology. We have secured from Toyota Motor Corp. two prototype units for the ETNZ trial that were still in their preproduction phase.

“We are excited to see the boat go in the water as a demonstration of the capabilities of Toyota’s hydrogen technology. Toyota is focused on helping advance hydrogen technology and its development in New Zealand through commercial partnerships, such as the ETNZ fuel cell chase boat, under our Toyota Hydrogen Projects banner.”

Each of the 5 Teams contesting the 37th America's Cup have to built one Hydrogen Foiling Chase Boat hence the Boat from Emirates Team New Zealand is nicknamed „CHASE ZERO“

Head Performance Coach ROB WILSON has been coaching British Olympic & America's Cup Challengers since 2014 and gives us 5 Key Elements of the new Protocol from a coaching Point:

  • Learnings! What did INEOS TEAM UK learn about the AC75 Class during the 36th America's Cup that can be applied to the 37th Edition?
  • Biggest Challenge? The Requirements as a Head Coach changes depening if your Team is in a Development Phase or in a Racing Phase shortly before the Competition starts.
  • Boat Changes. The new AC40 Class is considered to be a huge learning tool for the British Challenger. Also there will be a Self-Tacking Jib on the new AC75 Class Yachts which frees up one additional Sailor.
  • The Wind Limits. They stayed the same and will be between 6.5 Knots and 21 Knots
  • Coach Wilsons favoured Phase during an America's Cup Campaign

7TH APRIL 2022
„CHASE ZERO“ , EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALANDS NEW HYDROGEN POWERED FOILING CHASE BOAT TAKES ITS FIRST FLIGHT IN AUCKLAND
Source: Emirates Team New Zealand
Source: Emirates Team New Zealand

Just one week after America's Cup Defender Emirates Team New Zealand launched their new Hydrogen powered foiling Chase Boat „Chase Zero“ it took its first laps around Auckland Harbour.

Project Manager GEOFF SENIOR:

“This is just our second day on the harbour! And if I am honest, we are always pretty conservative with our commissioning timeframes, but everything has worked amazingly off the bat, maybe one or two small gremlins to work out of the system as always, but we didn’t expect it to all be up and foiling as quickly as we have got it today out here.”

Emirates Team New Zealand Design Coordinator DAN BERNASCONI:

“Travelling at 50 knots on the water requires a lot of power, and so foiling, like in sailing, was an obvious choice for us to reduce drag and therefore help to extend our range to around 180km on one fill of hydrogen which is stored on 4 tanks onboard, two in each hull.”

Emirates Team New Zealand Electrical Engineer MICHAEL RASMUSSEN:

“The fuel cells provide the majority of the energy, however the battery acts as a filter for the faster changes in power demand. The response time of the fuel cell is much slower than available from the battery, so during fast changes in demand the battery supplies the difference as a compromise in performance was not an option.”

“The battery is also used to achieve the higher speeds. The boat can cruise at approximately 30kts with the 160kW generated from the fuel cells, but to achieve the higher end speeds up towards 50 knots we are able to draw from the batteries as well to bump this up to around 420kW for shorter periods. The fuel cell will then re-charge the batteries once there is excess power available again.”

Emirates Team New Zealand Chief Operating Officer KEVIN SHOEBRIDGE:

“This really is a considerable step forward in clean renewable energy in the marine industry. Looking at Chase Zero foiling along today, it looks like a futuristic power boat, but then you actually need to remind yourself that there are zero carbon emissions, it is basically water vapour coming out of the exhaust which is amazing when considering the positive environmental impact that can be made by reducing emissions from regular boat engines.”

Emirates Team New Zealand Chief Executive Officer GRANT DALTON:

“The team have really delivered under all sorts of Covid challenges and pressure to get this boat designed, built, commissioned and foiling in such a small timeframe. And when I say ‘the team’ that includes the essential partners we have bought together as well like Toyota, Global Bus Ventures, Gurit and several others.

This project is all about proving how we can influence the global marine industry by producing a prototype hydrogen powered foiling catamaran. And today has been a huge progression towards that. We have no doubt there will be a lot of entities and organisations that will be watching and thinking how the technology can be adapted to their specific use case or ideas.”
