THE 37TH AMERICA'S CUP
BACKGROUND
THE AMERICA'S CUP IS THE OLDEST INTERNATIONALLY SPORTING TROPHY. IT WAS FIRST CONTESTED IN 1851 AROUND THE ISLE OF WIGHT. THE SCHOONER AMERICA UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF THE NEW YORK YACHT CLUB, THEN ONLY 7 YEARS OLD, WON IT AND RENAMED IT AMERICA'S CUP UPON RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES. THIS STARTED A 132-YEAR SPORTING DOMINANCE, THE LONGEST IN SPORTS. IT WASN'T UNTIL 1983 WHEN AUSTRALIA TOOK THE CUP FROM THE AMERICANS. SINCE THEN AMERICA HAS WON IT 5 TIMES (1987, 1988, 1992, 2010 & 2013; NEW ZEALAND WON IT 4 TIMES (1995, 2000, 2017, 2021) AND SWITZERLAND WON IT 2 TIMES (2003 & 2007). THE 37TH EDITION IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE IN BARCELONA IN 2024.

THE PROTOCOL

THE VENUE

It will be the 3rd Time in the last 17 Years the Cup will be defended away from the Defenders Home Waters.

After winning in 2003 Swiss Syndicate Alinghi was forced to defend it in Valencia since they did have an open water course.

After defending it in 2013 Oracle Team USA took the AC to Bermuda

And it 2024 in will be defended in Barcelona by Emirates Team New Zealand because the didn't have sufficient funding.

Barcelona is a brillant City though.

Your thoughts?

Very bizarre. The America's Cup has been such a big deal for New Zealand its hard to believe they couldn't benefit from having the Cup in Auckland. But sailing is a difficult spectator sport, so maybe it it isn't really a good investment even if the country turns out well to support the team.

Anyway, Barcelona will be great. I've wondered why sailing hasn't been more of a thing there.

The Challengers though seem to be liking the Venue

@Illiniwek

I've started to add some Team Profiles of the Teams that have been accepted and will compete.

Feel free to ask Questions though I'm not sure that I can answer them all. I was a Data Analyst as part of the INEOS TEAM UK British Challenge during the 36th America's Cup. We lost 1-7 in the Challenger Final to the Italians who went on to lose to the Kiwis by 3-7 in the Cup Match itself.

Unfortunately for me Mercedes GP and their Applied Science Division took over our Team for AC37 so I was out of a job Sad

WOW! Thats very, very cool to have worked on an America's Cup campaign. Did you have a connection to sailing beforehand, or did you just happen to stumble upon the America's Cup as a professional opportunity?

The AMAZING Comeback of ORACLE TEAM USA during the America's Cup 2013 got me interested & inspired and after the Sponsorship of INEOS was announced in April 2018 they were looking for people to join their Campaign so I applied and then after a few months they accepted me as a Data Analyst.

I am specialised in Wind Data and Auckland was quite a tricky place to sail because it has such a narrow stretch of water. It was very challenging especially after the Pandemic hit. I had bascially a Wind Program on my Computer trying to get the most accurate Data which then was supplied to the Team.

I am sailing quite a bit myself particularly on lakes. My brother is a Sailing Coach.

16TH JUNE 2021
AC37 UPDATE
Source: Emirates Team New Zealand/Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

Shortly before the 3-Month exclusive Negotiation Period concluded Emirates Team New Zealand & their defending Yacht Club Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron released a Joint Statement declaring that the Negotiations between Auckland City Council, the Auckland Mayors Office & the New Zealand Central Government had failed when it comes to funding the next Event and the Team would now be looking at Offshore Options.

In the Days after this Announcement the KIWI HOME DEFENSE PROJECT under the Stewardship of Greymouth Petroleum Rich-Lister Mark Dunphy & Jim Farmer QC was formed in an attempt to keep the America's Cup in New Zealand. Jim Farmer though had been highly critical towards Emirates Team New Zealand ever since the Kiwis won in Bermuda 2017 accusing the Team of numerous wrongdoings through the NZ Media. It remained to be seen if Dunphy/Farmer could put together the neccessary funds for another Defense in Auckland.

1ST SEPTEMBER 2021
EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND RESPONDS
Source: Emirates Team New Zealand

This Statement from a Group of Long Term Team Members of Emirates Team New Zealand is a direct Response to Greymouth Petroleum Rich-Lister Mark Dunphy & his Associates who demanded through the NZ Media that Grant Dalton, CEO of ETNZ steps down from his Role as CEO of the Team. Whether that demand came directly from Mark Dunphy or one of his Associates remains to be seen.

1ST DECEMBER 2021
AC37 ENTRY PERIOD OPENS
Source: Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron/Emirates Team New Zealand

In a short Statement Emirates Team New Zealand Chief Operating Officer Kevin Shoebridge & Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Commodore Aaron Young confirmed that Entries are now open for additional Challenges to join the Challenger of Record INEOS Britannia.

Shoebridge confirmed that several new Challenges were received after Entries opened but didn't disclose the Teams who have challenged saying quote „It's up to the challenging Teams to make their Challenge public“.

The AC37 Entry Period remains open until the 31ST OF JULY 2022. Late Challenges can be received until the 31ST OF MAY 2023.

The opening of the AC37 Entry Period is another big milestone in the AC37 Cycle. Notoriously the Media goes into a frenzy & speculation on who & which Team has challenged. Right of the bat the New Zealand Herald, New Zealands largest Newspaper reported that one of the additional Entries would be the 2-Time America's Cup Winner Alinghi. Whether that's proven to be correct remains to be seen.
