Harkin would do better in the Midwest than Gore, but his populism would cost him Oregon and New Mexico at least.

He could till win OR+NM if enough Nader voters supported the ticket. I know for me at least, Harkin is far more preferable to Lieberman.

Clinton might have a harder time triangulating without such a clean departure from the New Dealers, but assuming his presidency goes similarly:


Vice President Tom Harkin (D-IA) / Senator John Edwards (D-NC)
Governor George Bush (R-TX) / Fmr. Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney (R-WY) ✓

The zenith of neoliberalism is the worst time to run with the kind of union-supported populism he built his campaign on in 1992. I could see him running with a young John Edwards to try and stir up excitement. In Oregon, any environmentalists he loses that Gore carried are made up for by improvements in the east of the state and maybe some anti-globalization voters.
