He did not have an affair with his campaign manager yet. Would he do better or worse than Kerry?

President George Bush (R-TX) / Vice President Dick Cheney (R-WY) ✓
Senator John Edwards (D-NC) / Senator John Kerry (D-MA)

I've been trying to figure out who he reminds me of for a while now, and I've got it: Jimmy Carter. It would be interesting to see Edwards and Bush cancel each other's good old boy personalities out. His trade policy probably flips Iowa with the way the economy was going at that point, but a combination of his ineptitude and the gay marriage ballot initiative that helped Bush win Ohio in 2004 keeps him from victory. His environmental platform and positions on social issues lock him out of the South and Mountain West too.

Edwards carries his home state of North Carolina, but it isn't enough.

Senator John Edwards (D-NC)/Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) 48%
President George W. Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dick Cheney (R-WY) 48%

With Hillary as VP, he could carry Arkansas (even Kerry only lost it by single digits). Also probably Iowa.

Nothing much would've indicated Edwards being any less boring and uninspiring than Kerry. Bush with the IRL 2004 map+Wisconsin.

If he runs a disciplined, economically populist campaign and camps out with it in OH and IA, he wins the election. If not, he loses.
