This is true, but he twice voted for Eisenhower and voted for Nixon in 1960. His turn to the right was pretty much complete by the close of the 50s.

Yeah, it's hard to see him getting nominated when New Deal liberalism was arguably at its peak, even within the GOP. You would need to create some kind of alternate history for this to happen.
