If James Garfield survived his assassination attempt and ran for reelection, would he win? There was massive Republican fatigue, but Garfield was mostly honest and competent

The Garfield presidency is one of my favourite what-ifs. I have to wonder if Cleveland and the Bourbon Democrats would have still been successful afterwards or if Garfield would have managed a proto-Progressive coalition by supporting civil rights even in the aftermath of the end of reconstruction.

He would've probably won in 1884 given how weak Blaine was and how much baggage he had (and the fact that Blaine still lost by a hair). Garfield seems like he would have been quite an average president, probably quite a bit like his VP, Chester Arthur, turned out to be.
