What would have happened if the US had been sanctioned over Iraq?

9/11 and Afghanistan still happen but the rest of the world balks at Bush's invasion of Iraq.

If the current Russian sanctions had been applied to the US in 2003, what would have happened exactly?

To our economy, to the world economy, and to the 2004 presidential election?

We would have had a terrible recession but not anywhere near as bad given how much most of the major companies in the world are(especially at the time) US based which would mean the world would be effectively sanctioning themselves .

The bigger question is what would happen to the UK economy given they had also invaded Iraq

Bush would probably lose 2004, but as noted above the effects of sanctions would be nowhere near what Russia is feeling today
