If Biden and Sanders had declined to seek the nomination in 2020 how would the primaries gone? Who would have won? Would that person have defeated Trump?

I was predicting a Warren vs. Harris primary around 2018. Usually I predicted a Warren win, but given her performance in the actual 2020 primaries, I'm not so sure she'd do well even if she had a lane to herself. In any case, here's a Warren map.

President Donald Trump (R-FL) / Vice President Mike Pence (R-IN) ✓
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) / Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)

On the other hand, if it's Harris or Buttigieg, I expect a map pretty similar to Biden's. Sherrod Brown would get a map like Sanders'.

Maybe Jay Inslee would be the Democratic nominee?

Sherrod Brown might run in a 2020 field without Biden, and he's the one candidate I can see doing better against Trump than Biden. If the rest of the field of candidates remains the same, I think Warren gets the nomination and loses to Trump.

I think you only get Sherrod Brown to run if the Democrats have control of the U.S. Senate and the Ohio Governorship after 2018. So it would require a swing towards the Democrats and that means they are gaining close to 60 seats in the House in 2018.  I think Sherrod Brown under this scenario really could have gained back a lot of ground the Democrats have lost and won a decent victory.
