I don’t think there was one particular demographic. It was an incredibly diverse group. The biggest group to flip though was probably middle class (and above) white evangelicals primarily in the south but some in the Midwest and Great Plains states as well. A majority had probably been Democrats in the past (or still were in registration but on their way out) but a minority was Republicans that had taken a chance on Carter in 76 who appealed to rural voters nationally and probably did better in historically Republican northern rural areas then any Democratic nominee since FDR.
