Fair enough, it's not like there haven't been any financial incentives involved for people to convert to Islam before.

If you want to call "keeping your head on your shoulders" a "financial incentive," sure.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the jizya, not to forced conversion per se.

That's one way of seeing it but I was primarily referring to how Islam had spread to West Africa and South-East Asia via Arab merchants.
