How would the 2008 and 2012 elections play out if Romney was the Republican nominee in '08 and McCain the Republican nominee in '12?

2008

Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) / Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) ✓
Fmr. Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) / Fmr. Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR)

"I like being able to fire people."

-The guy who looks like he'd fire you; that said, being a border hawk and Mormon would probably save him from a total wipeout in the West

2012

President Barack Obama (D-IL) / Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE)
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) / Fmr. Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-MN)

An aging McCain does even worse with Tea Party voters.

2008:

2012:

Not tickets reversed as in 2008 goes from McCain-Palin to Palin-McCain and 2012 goes from Romney-Ryan to Ryan-Romney, but rather 2008 goes from McCain-Palin to Romney-Ryan and 2012 goes from Romney-Ryan to McCain-Palin.
