An Alabama former liberal Democrat (Goldwater vote is explained by "unpledged Democratic electors" being on the ballot instead of Johnson, which could've meant George Wallace picks extremist electors) who became more economically comfortable with age, or they picked up a copy of the National Review around 1986.

A racist and social conservative, but economic progressive, who splits his time between SD and MN and voted for Goldwater because he thought Johnson was going too far, and then for Humphrey and McGovern because they were from his states and he liked that they were pro-labour and for the 'white working class.' Gradually becomes more liberal and votes for Carter in 1976, but Anderson in 1980 because of water problems. Mondale '84 because he was for the working class and Reagan was too right-wing. Voted for Bush even though the region swung hard leftwards because he actually feared that Dukakis would handle the farm crisis / drought even worse than Reagan/Bush. Voted Perot because of protectionist stance and so he could say he voted for an independent. Voted for Dole because Dole was from the Great Plains region like him. Voted for Bush twice because he considered Gore and Kerry to be too liberal on social issues and thought Bush was more genuine and 'pro-working-class.' Voted for McCain because he remained staunchly pro-Iraq, and for Romney because he thought Obamacare was too much. Voted against Trump in 2016 because he thought that Trump was a fake populist attempting to race-bait and win the white-working-class, and was disgusted by Access Hollywood, and against Trump in 2020 because of COVID19 (he himself was at least 77 at the time of the election).
