Longtime Sen. Frank Lautenberg reluctantly retires in 2000, leaving an open seat. Multimillionaire businessman and liberal activist Jon Corzine beats perennial candidate and former Gov. Jim Florio; Gov. Whitman, who is barred from a third term in 2001, easily freezes the GOP Senate field.

Conservative Libertarian Murray Sabrin runs as a Libertarian; hoping to siphon votes from Whitman.

Who wins?

Lean Whitman, even if the frisking photo comes out in this scenario. Corzine was an incredibly bad politician who almost blew the race anyway against Franks.

The frisking photo should have probably cost Whitman her political career. Giuliani, Bloomberg all did this stop and frisk stuff. Ironically, in the Northeast, most white Northeasterners supported stop and frisk, even in places like Connecticut.

Corzine won because of the urban and suburban turnout machine and he had the $$$$$. Bob Franks was a good candidate, he could have been senator or governor in 2000 and 2001. He could have beaten McGreevey.
