Like, a real person. Not some ad hoc fictional character.

They could compete with Obama in the Midwest, but have estabilishment defectors hurting their campaign. This scenario assumes Rob Portman is VP.

"Populism" in 2012 was the Tea Party, and while you're not going to get a Trump 2016 map, you could maybe get better results than Romney depending on the candidate (the less Deep Southern and Evangelical, the better).

What about Rand Paul, Sarah Palin, or Marco Rubio? At this point, they were all part of this nebulous "TEA Party" concept. Especially Rand Paul. Marco Rubio is weird because he went from a neocon campaigning as a libertarian, to an extreme neocon, to a nationalist like Hawley or JD Vance all within a few years. Sarah Palin is basically Trump with no money or marketing skills so maybe not her.
