Mitt Romney defeats Barack Obama in 2012. His first term is similar to Obama's first term, just with the parties and political positions reversed, and the Tea Party remains strong throughout, and looks for a primary challenger to Romney. The candidate that steps forward is Reality Star and Businessman Donald Trump.

Who wins the Republican Nomination?

Hands down, Romney wins. Trump perhaps could have been prevented in actual 2016 already, if the field wasn't so divided. He just won 44% of the actual vote in the primaries. Facing an incumbent prez would have been even harder. Best case is a 1992-style primary, with Trump dropping out after Super Tuesday.

Romney, but Trump is a contributing factor in tanking him that year.

What does Trump run on to gain traction though. Remember the issue that caused him to rise in 2015 was also an issue Romney was hardline on and remains hardline too this day and that is Immigration. Romney also campaigned in 2012 of labeling China as a currency manipulator so Trump couldnt even play that card against Romney.
