The health insurance piece is way out of the mainstream. I can't imagine that Humana (headquartered in Kentucky) would want this at all.

It does fascinate me how, with gay marriage now the law of the land, Republicans have moved on to litigating transgender rights. But as I've said before, I feel that this is an issue that will ultimately be decided in favor of its proponents.

This seems pretty clearly illegal and/or unconstitutional.

Ah sh**t, here we go again. Considering Arkansas set the model, I suspect they'll win out this time.

Denying trans kids medical care that drastically reduces suicide rates is monstrous. The legislators who vote for this will have blood on their hands.

That's the idea.

The first time ever that Humana will take the right side... hopefully.

They really are saying "Trans kids don't exist at all so let's make them cis"... it's similar in a way to the "Gay kids don't exist at all so let's make them straight."

Typical hostility from a legislature that I'm sure is dominated by virulent homophobes and anti-trans people.

If Republicans ever cared about private insurance, liberty, free markets, they should let Humana/United Healthcare cover transgender care.

Waiting for the "moderate common sense centrists" on this forum to explain to us how this is totally reasonable and any opposition to this is just wokism gone mad.

Reminder this is from the very same people who screech "body autonomy" when it comes to taking a vaccine so they don't end up another unnecessary body in the ICU.

I am a trans minor and I agree with this bill. They need to wait until they're 18 until they are able to consent as to what happens to their body, especially lifechanging unrevetsable decisions like this.

I think you're being uncharitable here. I said the other day that some have continued to imply, or at least believe, that I personally must be a right-winger or right-leaning, and not actually a centrist. That's not a correct interpretation of my views, and it's not a correct interpretation of other people's views. But I've already condemned this, and I don't like how this has become a culture war issue.

Sorry, you weren't who I was thinking of when I made this post and I didn't mean to single you out. On the other hand, the post right above yours is emblematic of what I was describing almost to the point of parody.

This bill is banning stuff that isn't irreversible, and banning health insurance from covering it for people over 18

Beshear will veto this crap anyway?

But good again to see how the GOP is focused on actual problems. But yup, Dems are the ones obsessed with culture war stuff.

They can override, it only takes a simple majority in Kentucky.

LOL, I know that's the case in WV, too. What's the veto power even worth then?

My surmise given the forum's high interest in the issue, is that KY put this bill up to troll Atlas. The timing is just too serendipitous to be a coincidence.

One of my best friends is a trans person from Kentucky  Sad  and she's already deeply in medical debt

Really hope this bill fails, and doesn't set a precedent nationwide. Red states have been focused on attacking trans rights for years, but this is next level compared to what they were already doing.

Trans rights may just be a philosophical debate topic to many people here, but please know that this affects people's lives and livelihoods, often existentially, and ignoring casual and overt transphobia legitimize legislation like this.

I just hope when this passes--when--it doesn't give my state's GOP any ideas when they take back the veto-proof majority this year, because I really don't want to have to detransition, and I think I might have to if I can't afford hormones because the state won't let my insurance cover them.

Incredibly pro free market to ban what an insurance company can cover...

The statistics for trans people who do not receive gender affirming and competent healthcare are bleak. This is also child abuse.
