At first I thought this was a "resist the mob" type of situation, but it seems it could be applied to racial groups as well. What do you think of this, Atlas? Is this even remotely surprising?

Unfortunate, but maybe not surprising. Tribalism is pretty deeply ingrained in the human mind, so we should do our best to direct it in directions that are less socially harmful.

r/PCM made the same interpretive mistake--assuming "collective" to mean "collectivist".

"...describing hatred (vs. mere dislike) towards collective entities (societal phenomena, institutions, groups), but not individuals, heightened feelings linked to the behavioral approach system (BAS; eagerness, determination, enthusiasm), which underlies a sense of significant purpose". I'm too lazy to read the article, but this to me clearly refers to groups--clans, subcultures, classes, etc.--rather than toward the masses, members of the DSA, etc.

Sure, of course. This is what politics, nations, wars, revolutions, etc. are all built on.

Imagine taking a single experimental psychology study seriously after the replication crisis. Just-so stories for moderns.

Like how Pakistan built its identity around Islam and being anti-India.

Probably a necessary social construct for surviving the maelstrom of violence from 2000 B.C. onwards as humanity spread.
