Either 1936, 1940, or 1944 if I had to guess. I know that either Lyndon Johnson in 1964 or Bill Clinton in 1996 was the last time the Democrats won the white vote overall. I recall reading that the only states where the Democrats won the white vote in 2020 were Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Maryland, DC, Virginia, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii.

It was '64. The white vote was within five points in '76, '92, and '96, though.

Biden won the white vote in Virginia but not Rhode Island?

I forgot to include Rhode Island in my post.

I forgot to include Rhode Island in my post.

You also forgot Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Maine.  There's no way Biden carried the white vote in Virginia, and he probably didn't in Illinois either.

What about NH, Maine and Minnesota. I'm fairly sure Biden carried the white vote in those states.

In Virginia for sure and maybe.. Illinois the white vote went Republican

I know the black vote flipped to FDR in 1936, but I don't know if he did better with them than whites then.

I thought that Joe Biden only won a plurality of the white vote in Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Maine, but still polled higher than Donald Trump with the white vote. As for Virginia and Illinois, the margins out of NOVA and the Chicago metro area seem to show that Joe Biden narrowly won the white vote in those states considering the voter turnout in those specific areas.

I read today that FDR won 71-79% of the African American vote in 1936, but only around 52-55% in 1932, so 1932 is the correct answer after all.

He carried the white vote in the all the northeastern states as Biden won those states by a large margin enough to win the white vote as well as those states are whiter on average compared to the rest of the country

Illinois is a tie so I’m not sure

As for Virginia, Trump definitely won the white vote and probably by double digit margi however it is probably the closest in the whole south ahead of Florida

Especially so, given that 1932 is the last election in which the Republicans won the black vote.
